Runners on 2nd and 3rd, 2 out, ground ball hit to shortstop in the hole. Ball passes in front of runner and hits off shortstops glove. Ball was close to runner but did not make contact. Home plate umpire calls interference on the runner calling him out for the 3rd out of the inning. What criteria does one take in making this call?

Runner is allowed to run to the base in front of the fielder as long as he does not impede/or interfere with the player playing the ball. He cannot stop or purposely try to block the fielder. But if he is just running to the base then it is not interference. The criteria is that the runner has to interfere with the fielders ability to play the ball or purposely attempts to block the fielder playing the ball (ie. stops in front of the fielder and tries to obstruct his view of the ball).
